Like a theatre set this image across the water is seen flat on – the figures in the cafés
appear as characters on stage. The brilliant sun creates strong, vivid shadows and the
reflections in the water are disturbed and broken up, appearing as splashes of colour.
The buildings dominate the scene, the white walls, orange roofs and dark windows
uncompromising and bold. A complementary colour balance of orange and blue
dominates.
