A very particular feature of Hydra is the way the buildings stack up the hillside, with
smaller buildings on the lower level on the quay and grander buildings further up. The
stone of the buildings is warm and many of them are rendered, painted white or
sometimes strong colours, yellow ochre or deep red. The buildings present grand simple
façades with small windows and the reflections in the water of the harbour echo the
verticality of the structures.
